Sleep and the pitfalls of consciousness

It’s that time and I should be sleeping
my husband is sleeping soundly upstairs, lights out and peaceful.

I, on the other hand, after two sleeping pills am still waiting downstairs for the first pangs of sleep and more importantly for my eyes to start to close no matter how I fight them,

I play on the computer, the phone, flip through magazines, eat (bad bad idea) and do my nails but generally to no avail. My conscience is alive and thriving in these wee hours, come morning, I’ll be curled up in bed, snuggled with my extra blanket and not a coherent thought will hold in my head.

It’s the usual husband to bed early, wife up late ritual one we are both accustomed to and one we’ve learned to except, at least for now.

Goodnight world, sleep well!
